Ministering to the Invisible Battles
Deployment isolates. Even in a crowd, a sailor can feel completely alone. Birthdays are missed. Marriages are strained. Children grow, and moments are lost forever. As chaplains, we minister to these invisible battles.
I remember receiving a message late at night from a junior sailor.
"Sir, I don’t think I matter to anyone here."
His words were raw. He didn’t want a sermon. He wanted to be seen.
We met the next day. He talked, I listened. Over time, I helped him connect with others and find meaning in his daily duties. He later told me that conversation changed everything. Not because of what I said, but because I showed up.
Chaplains help break the cycle of isolation. We create safe spaces. We lead resilience groups. We check in after long watches and encourage connections that build community. Loneliness thrives in silence, but healing begins with being heard.
Scripture Reflection:
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)
